Making WIRX: for relief of Equine Insulin Resistance

Like many of you, we battled insulin resistance (also called IR) with one of our own horses. Losing that battle with our boy, Liam, was devastating; but it drove us deeper into the research, and led us to the product we call WIRX.

Why Do We Call It “WIRX”?

We chose this name, pronounced “works”, because it is designed specifically with the IR horse in mind… and because it WORKS! WIRX is designed to normalize glucose and insulin levels in horses, both of which could help to alleviate the painful and sometimes fatal symptoms that IR horses deal with.

How Do We Know it Works?

We knew of several research studies on rats and humans using cranberry extract to control insulin resistance, but no studies had been done on equines.

We decided it was time to change that… and we trialed it!

The Field Trial

In 2018, we worked with a local veterinarian to plan and carry out a field trial of WIRX. Dr. Wendy Pearson, DVM, from the University of Guelph, was also on board to approve the plans and support the data analysis.

The lead veterinarian was already working with several horses and ponies who were confirmed to be Insulin Resistant (IR). The owners of these animals were already accustomed to a consistent routine of feeding at the same daily intervals and having routine blood work done to monitor insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels.

During the trial, data was collected from blood tests done at day 0, day 45, day 90 and at 1 year.

Each horse’s blood was drawn at three hours post-morning feed, by the same veterinarian, and was tested at the same laboratory.

There were no changes made to the diets or medications being administered to any of the trial horses during this period.

The Results

We were amazed by how quickly G’s WIRX was able to act on the insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels of our trial horses!

4 Months

  • Average glucose decreased 18.3%

  • Average insulin decreased 68.3%

  • Average triglycerides decreased 13%

1 Year

  • Average glucose decreased 22.8%

  • Average insulin decreased 88%

This significant improvement in the insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels in the trial IR horses was beyond exciting! During the trial, all horses maintained a healthy weight, and with these levels kept within normal ranges were able to enjoy a drastic reduction in laminitic episodes.

More than 90% of these horses continue to experience ongoing success with WIRX.

Clinical Trial to Begin in 2022

We are excited to announce that a formal, University of Guelph-led clinical trial of G’s WIRX will begin this spring, 2022!
